Another good example is 'Her Majesty's Wizard' by Chistopher Stasheff. King's Dark Tower series kind of takes a bit of Western tone at times with the Gunslinger and really does a great job of blending the two genres. (some Sci Fi can even be inferred based on the storyline - though you wont find robots or spaceships in there) Her Majesty's Wizard is more traditional but keeps away from a lot of the cliches at the same time. If you havent, maybe thumb through those or give them a full read to see how these two very different styles of writing and stories altogether managed to be fantasy, but in a league of their own. Even Solomon knew that.
I've turned from trying to reinvent things and have tried to retell different stories. Right now, I'm working on retelling a novel of manners, but I've struggled with retelling Frankenstein and the book of Hosea. I love taking the crux of these stories, making the themes modern, taking the characters and turning them into something new, and trying to make something beautiful.
I dare to say that this isn't something unique to fantasty writers. We are all trying to do this.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8531303716851976145.post-13411226586544185962013-10-08T06:57:04.067-04:002013-10-08T06:57:04.067-04:00"How do I set myself apart? I get carried away with it at times, and it slows my writing down. I, too, need to find balance!

On the flipside, I have read some experimental pieces that have bored me to sleep or have confused me to no end...

Balance, balance, balance!Randy Wiremanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04705280558479129739noreply@blogger.com
